Quick note: BIOS and UEFI are not the same things but we can refer to the UEFI as the newer version of BIOS since this is its replacement and you will do everything you would have normally done through the BIOS in the UEFI.
There are multiple reasons why you might want to access the BIOS or UEFI, enabling, disabling or changing settings, installing new hardware, perform updates etc..
You may also want to enable virtualization to run a virtual machine which is something I discussed in my previous posts.
How to access the UEFI or BIOS
There are two ways to access the Bios or UEFI, using some short-key at bootup, or using the Windows Start menu.
Technically there is a third way to access the Bios, and that I automatic when you boot up a machine without an operating system installed.
Enter the Bios or UEFI Using a Short-key or key combination during Boot-up
We will first want to reboot your computer or laptop from Windows > Power > Restart
Once the screen goes black you will need to hold down one of the function key.
Unfortunately, the Key to hold down depends on the Maker of your Laptop or the Motherboard of your PC, but the most common function key is F2 which works with Dell, Lenovo, Toshiba, Asus, Acer for some other maker it could be DEL (delete key), F1, ESC etc. On Microsoft Surface Tablets you need to hold down the Up volume button.
You may want to search the model of your laptop or Motherboard if non of the above works alternatively you can use the Windows 10 Start menu from the settings.
Enter the Bios or UEFI using Windows 10 Start Menu
This method lets you restart your PC or Laptop and Windows will prompt you to select what you want to do.
First: Windows > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Restart Now
After you click on Restart Now the computer will reboot and show you a blue screen with some options.
You will need to click on:
- Troubleshoot
- Advance options
- UEFI Firmware Settings
- Restart
Whichever method you will use, you will be taken to the UEFI or BIOS home screen like the one below from DELL.
